When race plans change

What to check when your triathlon swim is cancelled

If your triathlon swim is cancelled, confirm the organizer's announcement for your event and wave before changing your plans. Find the revised format, start location and time, course, transitions, equipment rules and cutoffs. A cancelled swim does not automatically mean a duathlon, the same start time or the same finish deadline.

Does a cancelled swim always become a duathlon?

No. World Triathlon's 2026 rules allow several exceptional-condition formats, including duathlon and two-segment events, as well as postponement or cancellation where appropriate. These are options under that rulebook, not a promise about your race. Read the actual decision and confirm which governing rules apply.

What does a real format change look like?

In a 2026 example reported by World Triathlon, water-quality concerns led Torremolinos organizers to replace the swim with a 2.5 km opening run before the 20 km bike and 5 km final run. Those distances describe that event, not a standard replacement for every cancelled swim.

What common mistakes should you catch when reading the announcement?

Check the event name, edition, distance, category and wave. Save the latest official message with its timestamp and source link. Separate 'swim familiarization cancelled' from 'race swim cancelled': a practice-session notice does not by itself describe the competition.

Use the channels named in your athlete guide, such as the official event site, email or race briefing. If a screenshot or another athlete's message conflicts with a newer official notice, ask an official to clarify. Do not enter closed water to test it or stage a replacement swim yourself.

What should you recheck before going to the start?

Write down the new discipline sequence and each distance. Confirm the start location, reporting time, wave procedure and timing-chip instructions. Check whether the route or number of laps changed; do not rely on your saved course file without comparing it with the new map.

Walk through the revised equipment sequence on paper: what will you wear at the start, where will the bike and running shoes be, and which exits and mount lines apply? Ask about bag access and gear collection if transition arrangements changed. Keep the packing and transition guides below for the detailed equipment tasks.

Record revised cutoffs separately from distances. Ask what starts each clock, whether transitions count and which intermediate checkpoints still apply. Do not subtract an expected swim time from an old overall limit and treat the result as the new deadline.

How do you make a short change record before racing?

Use six rows: official notice and time checked; format and distances; start location and reporting time; transition and equipment changes; cutoff clocks and checkpoints; unresolved questions. Put the official answer beside each row rather than relying on memory.

For an illustrative example, suppose a message confirms a run-bike-run format and a new 08:10 start, but gives no revised cutoff. Record the confirmed start and leave the cutoff unresolved. Ask, 'Does the old cumulative bike limit still apply, and from which start time?' Do not fill that blank using a predicted swim split.

Once the answers are clear, update transport, breakfast timing, familiar food and drink arrangements, and the plan shared with your supporter. A later gun does not necessarily mean later access to transition or parking. Keep those deadlines as separate entries.

Should you automatically race harder because the swim is gone?

No. A different sequence changes what you will do before the bike and final run. Use familiar, realistic preparation and discuss changes with your coach when possible. An unexpected opening run is not a reason to copy the pace of athletes around you.

If the revised demands or conditions exceed what you can safely attempt, discuss withdrawal and the event's reporting procedure with officials. Follow instructions if racing is stopped after it begins; do not assume the pre-start contingency rules tell you how an interrupted result will be handled.

Does a format change guarantee a refund or transfer?

Do not infer a refund, credit, transfer or qualification outcome from the words 'swim cancelled'. Read your entry terms and the organizer's specific notice. Keep the booking reference and ask the organizer about any option that is unclear.

Technical competition rules and commercial entry terms answer different questions. This guide cannot determine your contractual rights or promise that an event will offer a particular remedy.

Where does TriElite fit?

TriElite is an iPhone training companion for organizing race-based training; keep the organizer's revised instructions with your race documents. The app is free to download, with a paid subscription required for personalized plans and training features.

A training plan cannot issue the new course, change a cutoff or confirm a refund. Treat the official briefing as the authority for the event and review any later training changes separately.

Frequently asked questions

Does cancelling a practice swim mean the race swim is cancelled?

No. Confirm which session the notice names and look for an explicit competition decision for your distance and wave. Ask the organizer if the wording is unclear.

Can I use the old cutoff after a triathlon becomes a duathlon?

Only if the organizer confirms it still applies and explains the clock reference. Changed distances do not establish a replacement deadline. Check intermediate limits as well as the finish.

Do I still need to check in if the swim is cancelled?

Follow the revised event instructions. A format change does not automatically remove registration, timing-chip, bike check-in or transition-access requirements.
