Triathlon race numbers and body marking: what goes where?

A triathlon race-number packet may contain a bib, equipment stickers, body markings, a numbered swim cap and timing chip. Placement depends on event and category. British Triathlon rules specify back for cycling and front for running; the 2026 USA Triathlon Nationals guide uses other identifiers and no body marking. Check your event's current guide before applying anything.

What is the difference between a bib, body marking and sticker?

A race bib is the visible number worn on your clothing or race belt. Organizers and officials can use it to identify you on the course. A body marking is a number written or applied to skin; a sticker is attached to equipment such as a helmet, frame or seat post. These identifiers are not interchangeable, and the packet tells you which ones your event uses.

A numbered swim cap and timing chip have separate jobs. The cap identifies you in the water when the event issues numbered caps. The chip records timing at the event's mats or checkpoints. Wear or attach each item only as the athlete guide directs; do not assume a body mark replaces a bib or a timing chip.

Where should you wear the race bib?

Follow the rulebook named by your organizer. British Triathlon's 2026 Competition Rules say the number is displayed to the rear during cycling and to the front during running; the number is not required during the swim. They also say the number must remain clearly visible and must not be cut, folded or mutilated. A suitable race belt or bib is allowed under those rules.

The official 2026 Venice-Jesolo athlete guide gives the same practical orientation for that event: bib on the back for the bike and the front for the run. USA Triathlon's rules summary specifically requires a clearly visible number during the run. These examples do not establish one universal rule for every country, race brand or category. If your guide gives different placement instructions, follow that guide and ask the race office if it is unclear.

If you use a race belt, practise rotating the bib from back to front before race day. Keep it readable and unobstructed, and do not alter the number to make it fit. If you pin it to clothing instead, use the attachment method and garment position allowed by your event.

Do all triathlons use body marking?

No. The 2026 USA Triathlon Nationals athlete information says athletes will not be body-marked and will not receive race tattoos. For that event, identification includes a numbered swim cap, helmet stickers, a seat-post sticker and a race bib for the run. By contrast, British Triathlon's rulebook allows organizers to provide additional body markings, while making clear that they do not replace the official race number.

That difference is why generic instructions such as 'write your number on both arms and calves' can mislead. Check whether body marking is required, who applies it, which side or area is used, and whether your category has different instructions. Do not mark yourself unless the organizer has told you to; ask where and when marking takes place.

How should you handle number stickers and other packet items?

Use the event's diagram to match each sticker with the correct surface. For example, the 2026 USA Triathlon Nationals page calls for helmet stickers and a seat-post sticker. The official 2026 Venice-Jesolo athlete guide says its bike sticker goes around the seat post with the number facing backwards. Those are event instructions, not a reason to move a sticker to a different place at another race.

Before leaving packet pickup, compare the packet with the guide and ask about anything missing or unclear. Apply equipment stickers where shown, keep the bib number legible, and bring the instructions with you if your setup is unfamiliar. If an item is missing, damaged or has the wrong number, contact race staff for a replacement or correction. Do not borrow, swap or transfer another athlete's number.

How to check your number packet before transition

At packet pickup, compare each item with the current athlete guide: note which number goes on clothing or a race belt, which stickers attach to your helmet or bike, whether body marking is provided, and what identifies you in the swim. Check that the bib and stickers show the same identifier and ask staff about anything missing or unclear.

Before entering transition, attach each item in the position shown by the guide. Practise moving a permitted race-belt bib from back to front if your event requires that change. Keep the guide's packet diagram with your race notes. Common mistakes with race numbers

A bib turned the wrong way can be hard to identify, so check front-versus-back placement for each discipline. Do not cover it with a jacket, hydration vest or other gear where the rules require it to stay visible. British Triathlon's current rules prohibit cutting, folding or mutilating its issued numbers.

Do not copy generic body-marking instructions from another race: an event may not mark athletes at all, as the 2026 USA Triathlon Nationals example shows. Never borrow, swap or transfer another athlete's identifier. If your number is wrong, damaged or missing, ask race staff how to correct it before the start.

Frequently asked questions

Do I wear my triathlon race number during the swim?

British Triathlon's 2026 rules exclude the swim phase from the race-bib requirement. Your event may instead identify you with a numbered swim cap, timing chip or another issued item. Check the current athlete guide for your event.

Should my race number face front or back?

It depends on the event rules. British Triathlon rules specify back for cycling and front for running, and the official 2026 Venice-Jesolo athlete guide gives that placement for its event. USA Triathlon's public rule summary requires a clearly visible number during the run. Follow your own guide.

Can body marking replace my race bib?

Do not assume so. British Triathlon's rules describe additional body markings as supplemental to the official race number. Other events may not use body marking at all. Wear or apply each item the organizer specifically requires.

What if my bib or sticker is missing or has the wrong number?

Contact the race office or packet-pickup staff before the start and ask them to correct or replace it. Do not use another athlete's identifier or alter a number to hide the problem.
